Keeping your glass clean isn’t just about aesthetics — it directly affects the flavor of your smoke and the longevity of your piece. Resin buildup can harbor bacteria and degrade the taste of even premium tobacco. Here’s the definitive guide to cleaning every type of glass piece you own.
What You’ll Need
- 99% Isopropyl alcohol (the higher the percentage, the better)
- Coarse salt (sea salt or kosher salt works great as an abrasive)
- Pipe cleaners or brushes
- Resealable plastic bags (for soaking small pieces)
- Warm water for rinsing
- Cotton swabs for detail work
Cleaning a Water Pipe (Bong)
- Empty and rinse — Pour out all water and give it a quick rinse with warm water to loosen debris.
- Add alcohol and salt — Pour about ¼ cup of isopropyl alcohol and 2–3 tablespoons of coarse salt into the chamber.
- Cover the openings — Use your hands or plugs to cover the mouthpiece and downstem hole.
- Shake vigorously — Shake for 1–2 minutes, letting the salt scrub the interior walls.
- Let it soak — For heavy buildup, let the alcohol mixture soak for 30–60 minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly — Rinse multiple times with warm water until no alcohol smell remains.
- Clean the downstem & bowl — Soak in a resealable bag with alcohol and salt, shake, then rinse.
Cleaning a Hand Pipe
Hand pipes are simple to clean. Place the pipe in a resealable bag, fill with isopropyl alcohol and a pinch of salt, seal it, and shake well. Let it soak for at least 30 minutes, then use a pipe cleaner to scrub the stem and bowl. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.
Cleaning a Dab Rig
Dab rigs need special attention because concentrate residue (reclaim) is stickier than regular resin. After each session, while the banger is still warm (not hot), use a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol to wipe the interior of the banger. For a deep clean, follow the same bong-cleaning process above, but soak longer — reclaim takes more time to dissolve.
Cleaning a Grinder
- Disassemble all compartments
- Place in the freezer for 30 minutes (makes kief and residue easier to remove)
- Use a stiff brush to clean each chamber
- Soak metal grinders in isopropyl alcohol for 20 minutes
- Scrub with a brush and rinse with warm water
- Let dry completely before reassembling
How Often Should You Clean?
For the best experience: change bong water after every session, do a quick alcohol wipe of bowls and bangers daily, and do a full deep clean weekly for regular users or monthly for occasional users.
